Marj at Arches National Park

NEW! Lots of news this year but the biggest might be my retirement from teaching 8th grade math at West Middle School. It's hard to put into words what my time in the classroom meant to me; on most days it filled my heart but over the past several years the demands on classroom teachers became overwhelming. After much soul searching and self reflection, I decided to focus on my health and recovery after a scheduled spine surgery in July. Teaching is my calling and I miss working with the kids, so I am taking on substitute jobs when there is a need in the math department at WMS.

To keep busy in the fall, we did some great travel, then I started to get involved in the Andover Leadership Academy, where I learned about various departments and committees in town, and a budget advisory council for the superintendent.

As the year comes to a close I am reminded of all that is good in my life and how lucky I am to enjoy time with family and friends both near and far.

big walks
For the past several years I have been participating in walks for charity: the Avon Breast Cancer 3•Days, the Jimmy Fund Marathon walk along the route of the Boston Marathon, the annual Making Strides walks along the Charles River and the Hike for Hope to benefit Lazarus House in Lawrence:

  • New York 2002 3•Day: Rockland County, NY (It was supposed to be Bear Mountain to Manhattan, but that’s another story...)


separated at birth?
I realize that it’s a physical impossibility (given that we were separated by birth) but Kevin thinks that maybe Rachel got some of her looks from me.
